I did a lot of ‘happy meal toy’s’ like this: make them for a quarter, sell them for a buck. That’s enough to make a pretty plastic shell with a gimmick inside. Most artists burn out on it right away, but I enjoyed it. We’d get boxes of gimmicks from inventors to hopefully use in our toys, clever and delightful things, bite-sized confections of fun, most of which were never used or seen again, little marvels extinct or stillborn.
